About Sanford
Sanford is a city in Seminole County, Florida, located about 23 miles north of Orlando. As of the 2009 census, the population of the city was 50,998. The city proper has a total area of 22.6 square miles. It is located on the south side of Lake Monroe against the St. Johns River.
Before Sanford, was a town called Mellonville, which Sanford later encompassed. It became known as “The Gateway City to South Florida” due to its natural location. The citrus industry and the development of the railroad led Sanford to become the largest shipper of citrus in the area.
